Waste Reduction Week 2009 Events in Manitoba

Just working on buying things with less packaging and less wasting of what I do purchase. I try to follow the three R's and the first R being "reduce" I feel it is the most important.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited - Whiteshell Laboratories, Pinawa
The Waste Reduction Committee has a booth set up in the main security building. At the booth, staff will find information on recycling at Whiteshell Laboratories, tips for reducing waste and our green prize draw. The committee is showing a film called "Garbage!: The Revolution Starts at Home" during this week. Sign up for viewing is at the booth. The Waste Reduction Committee has announced that we will be phasing out the use of foam cups on-site.

Cangene, Winnipeg

Canuck Nanooks, RM Springfield
The Canuck Nanooks are a team of 4 sisters who are in their second year of representing Polar Bears International, Project Polar Bear. Our many projects have realized over 12 million tonnes of CO2 reduced. This waste reduction week we will act as Enviro-Spies at our schools and universities awarding green behaviour with great prizes. We are also at the Assiniboine Park Zoo for "Boo at the Zoo" educating the public about greener choices and the impact of a warming Arctic.

Participate in Waste/Material Management Exchange Program. As part of our production process recycle all our paper, cardboard, metals, chemicals are environmentally disposed. All employees recycle plastic bottles, pop cans, paper, wooden skids, etc. Reduce our garbage pick-up requirements.

We operate a year-round toy drive whereby we ask constituents to bring in new or gently used toys including stuffed animals, board games, books, sports equipment, etc. and we in turn will get them into the hands of needy children. Keep usable toys out of the trash!

We have a volunteer that will visit schools and make presentation to classes we will also promote Waste Reduction Week by writing an article in the local newspapers of the communities that we serve we will make at least one presentation before a Municipal Council (Reeve & Councillors)

Resource Conservation Manitoba
RCM will be working with schools across Winnipeg to promote random acts of green through its EnviroSpy program during Waste Reduction Week 2009. Students Caught in the Act of doing something good for the environment, whether it's recycling, starting a compost bin or simply cycling to school instead of depending on fossil powered transportation, will be awarded bookmarks and small prizes.
