Waste Reduction Week For Kids! There's lots of things that kids can do to help reduce waste, and every little bit counts! By reducing waste, you help protect forests, water and the air that we breath. See how many of the ‘Actions' below you can do this week. If you would like to learn more about how to help the environment, check out our ‘Links' section. Actions: • Turn off the lights when you leave a room. • Turn off the TV, computer and other items that use electricity when you are done using them. • Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth. This can save 22 litres of water, almost 2 full bathtubs worth per week! For a cool quiz on water use, visit (www.watercan.com/kids/kidsquiz.ppt) • Recycle! Throw your cans, plastics and paper in the recycling bin. This takes almost no effort, and saves a lot of energy and resources! One recycled can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours! • Re-use your paper, and save trees! Save paper that is used on one side and use it as scrap paper and for note pads. • Pack a litterless lunch. Use re-sealable containers for sandwiches, and a thermos or reusable bottle for drinks. Pack your lunch in a reusable bag or lunch box. • Walk or bike to school. If you live close to school, walk or bike instead of getting a ride from your parents. This reduces pollution and you get a bit of exercise! • Tell your family, friends and teachers what you are doing! The more people that are involved, the bigger the difference we can make! Links: Making recycled paper is a fun craft that helps conserve trees. For instructions visit: www.wrwcanada.com/10paper.htm For an interesting twist, try adding flower seeds to the hand-made paper. In spring, the entire piece of paper can be planted, and it makes a great gift!
