Waste Reduction Week for Communities As you know, waste diverted from a landfill equals money saved by a municipality, as well as a benefit to the environment. WRW is a perfect chance for municipal governments and community groups to promote waste reduction to residents, and to highlight what is being done locally to reduce or divert waste, whether it's a bylaw, a recycling depot, a compost site, or an energy-efficiency campaign. How to Participate: 1) Contact us for free posters, resource kits and information: click here 2) Check out our ‘Ideas for Communities' section below for great waste reduction initiatives. Ideas for Communities: • Lobby your municipal council to formally proclaim October 16-22nd Waste Reduction Week. For sample proclamations, click here. • Display WRW posters in libraries, schools, stores, coffee shops and municipal buildings. Contact us for free posters. • Hold an event where one or more speakers discuss an environmental issue. • Hold a composting workshop to educate others about backyard composting. For more information, contact the Compost Action Project. • Organize a community litter cleanup at school, in town, or along roadways. Sort recyclables from garbage. • Arrange car-pools for group events, lobby for the installation of bicycle racks and publicly recognize the ‘green commuters' in your community. • Organize a weekly market day for local farmers and artisans. • Start a ‘walking school bus' where parents take turns walking neighbourhood kids safely to and from school. For more information, check out Active & Safe Routes to School. • Hold second-hand swaps or sales of used sporting goods, books, clothing or other household items. Funds raised can go towards supporting your project or another environmental effort. • Start a community garden. Community gardens a great places for residents to interact, they beautify the neighbourhood, and provide healthy food without pesticides or fossil fuel use during transport. They also make great sites to teach about composting! • Write letters to the editor of your local paper to let others know what you are doing and why. • Distribute or organize a community pick-up of composters, rain barrels, recycling bins, etc. |
