Across
the province, dozens of Manitobans have been getting 'caught' reducing
waste, as part of the Waste Reduction Week 'Caught in the Act'
contest.
Over 300 people have been cited for waste reduction so far,
according to co-ordinator Stephanie Fulford of Resource Conservation
Manitoba (RCM). "We hope to catch at least another 100 people over
the weekend," says Fulford.
The contest sends 'EnviroSpies' out into the public on the look-out for
people recycling, taking the bus, re-using containers, and committing
other acts of waste reduction. From Winnipeg through to Churchill, RCM
spies have been awarding prizes including gift certificates, re-usable
mugs, and compact fluorescent light bulbs donated by Manitoba Hydro.
"It's been a really fun contest," says Fulford. "People
are always told what they are doing wrong in regards to the environment,
but rarely are they told -- let alone rewarded -- for doing something
right."
For an extra chance to win, people can also turn themselves in on the
RCM web site (www.resourceconservation.mb.ca).
RCM is co-ordinating Waste Reduction Week with support from Manitoba
Conservation, the Manitoba Product Stewardship Corporation, Manitoba
Hydro, and the City of Winnipeg.
Waste Reduction Week runs until October
24th.
