Join Mayor Glen Murray as he officially launches
the Winnipeg Commuter Challenge 2003!
The Winnipeg Commuter Challenge 2003 kicks off
on May 16th at 9:00 a.m. at the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall, in
the foyer of 555 Main Street.
The 4th Annual Winnipeg Commuter Challenge 2003, June 2-6, is an environmental
health and wellness initiative occurring in conjunction with Canadian
Environment Week. The Commuter Challenge is a national sustainable transportation
event where workplaces and schools from cities across Canada compete
as green commuters by choosing transportation alternatives to single-occupancy
vehicles.
Last year's Winnipeg Commuter Challenge was a huge success, with individuals
from 96 Winnipeg workplaces and schools celebrating Environment Week
by choosing to walk, roll, cycle, ride the bus or carpool to work or
school. In 2002, participants traveled over 500,000 green kilometres,
avoiding a total of 75 tonnes of green house gas emissions over the
one-week period!
If the total number of green kilometres were tallied over a one-year
period for all green commuters in Winnipeg, the figures would show that
sustainable transportation measures represent an important opportunity
for the reduction of green house gas emissions.
Such measures, including sustainable public transportation and transportation
demand management, are important facets of the City of Winnipeg's new
Environmental Strategy. Mayor Glen Murray will be on hand to unveil
the sustainable transportation measures the City is looking to pursue
with the Environmental Strategy.
Joining Mayor Murray will be Morley Calahan, Promotions & Contracts
Supervisor with Winnipeg Transit, who will announce Transit special
promotions for the Commuter Challenge 2003, including the Free
Transit for A Year Contest!
The Winnipeg Commuter Challenge is organized by Resource Conservation
Manitoba, a non-profit centre for applied sustainability, and its planning
partners. An itinerary for the Kick-off event is attached, along with
the list of Commuter Challenge 2003 Planning Partners and Sponsors.
With over 100 workplaces and schools already registered, the Winnipeg
Commuter Challenge 2003 promises to be bigger and better than ever!
