RCM welcomes Manitoba climate change legislation

Resource Conservation Manitoba applauds the Province of Manitoba for its legislative commitment to reach the climate change goals of the Kyoto Protocol. Proposed legislation was unveiled today in Winnipeg.

“Overall, we think the identification of a number of greenhouse gas reduction measures across a variety of sectors is a good approach,” said Kenton Lobe, president of the board of RCM. “There is no single magic solution to climate change. This is going to take continuing effort by everyone.”

Lobe added that RCM is especially pleased to see targets and timelines spelled out in the Province’s plan.

He said that RCM may have questions about specific measures once his organization sees more details. But he welcomed in particular the commitment to energy alternatives, landfill methane capture, building code updates, and alternative transportation.

Action on climate change has multiple economic, health and environmental benefits, Lobe said. “Manitobans can take purposeful steps on climate change while living green and living well.”
