Walking is more than a leisurely pleasure Ð it's a quick
and healthy means of travelling short distances. It can improve your
mood, stretch and strengthen your muscles and bones, and can be combined
easily into other travel modes, such as transit. Walk your way into fitness
and a happier, healthier outlook on life.
It is also a natural activity for our bodies that is virtually
injury-free. Brisk walking can reduce blood pressure, improve digestion
and strengthen bones. For more benefits and tips, check out "Walking:
The Activity of a Lifetime" (pdf).
Look for routes that are scenic and pleasurable to increase
your mental health along with your physical health. Find out about various
city trails that you can work into your walking commute through the Winnipeg
Trails Association and the City
of Winnipeg. Another good source, complete with maps and historical
information, is Winnipeg Walks, published by the Prairie
Pathfinders.
If you live too far to walk the entire distance, take the
bus and get off a few stops early to clear your head and add some physical
activity to your day. Or walk one way and return by bus.
Help instill in your children the pleasures of walking through the Active
and Safe Routes to School Program. It might turn into a
lifelong, healthy habit!
